LUKE BOYES TO BRING BOLD STYLE TO STAWELL

Date: 16th April 2025

(Stawell, VIC) – Australian 800m star Luke Boyes has stamped his name on the start list for the 1000m Invitational Handicap at the Powercor Stawell Gift this Easter Monday.

Boyes announced himself to the athletics world with his bold and fearless front-running style claiming the 2024 National Championship and will face off against an electric field at Stawell, which includes Olympic 800m finalist Peter Bol and Paris 2024 semi-finalist Peyton Craig.

The 21-year-old from the Blue Mountains in New South Wales has quickly become one of Australia’s most exciting middle-distance prospects. Under the guidance of his coach, two-time Olympian Ben St Lawrence, Boyes is building a reputation for bold racing and a relentless work ethic.

“My coach is a big inspiration. He’s achieved everything I want to in the sport,” Boyes said.

“Stawell is an icon of Australian athletics, and winning a sash there is something I’d love to have in my trophy cabinet.”

Boyes’ support network in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, is a vital part of his success and preparation.

“I’ve got a great network and a strong running community around me. There’s no distractions up here in the Blue Mountains, just good people and good training. It helps me stay grounded and focused.”

Luke is backing from a strong performance at the Australian Championships in Perth, stopping the clock with a personal best of 1:44.50 in the 800m final. Under pressure as the defending champion, finished on the podium in a confident run, which has set him up well for the $14,000 prize purse event at Stawell on Easter Monday.

Chair of Stawell Gift Event Management, Murray Emerson, said the inclusion of Boyes adds a thrilling dynamic to the invitational event.

“Luke’s aggressive racing style animates the field. His stride and confidence to lead from the front will put serious pressure on the rest of the pack. He’s a brilliant addition to the race.”
