Q&A with Councillor Lauren Dempsey, Northern Grampians Shire Council

Date: 5th March 2024

  1. Are you a Stawell local?

I live in Stawell, moving to the town just over 11 years ago from Geelong.

  1. What is your role at the Council and any other job?

I am a current first term councillor at the Northern Grampians Shire Council. I also work in the preventative health sector and am currently a Healthy Kids Advisor for the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation.

  1. Why do you think the Stawell Gift is so famous?

It’s a fabulous, historic event that is well supported by the pro running community. Many athletes who come and race at Stawell go on to compete at the highest level and this is exciting to see them coming up from the grass roots level. The members of the pro running community are amazing advocates for the town on Stawell and the Gift itself. The local community and council are truly supportive of it too. Being able to publicise the event far and wide really draws a crowd and promotes not only the sport but the town of Stawell and Northern Grampians Shire as a whole.

  1. Tell us about your love of fashion?

I got into Fashions on the Field about two years ago where I decided to give it a crack at the Stawell Gift. I came runner up and got a taste for it and wanted to keep going! I love using my creative side to put together different looks and wear something that’s unique and I feel comfortable in. It’s all about expressing yourself!

  1. Anything else you’d like us to know?

I used to compete in athletics when I was younger, and I loved sprinting. I also love the town of Stawell so for me combining the Stawell Gift is a perfect combination!
