<\/strong>\"\"<\/a>Thomas Smith was the first elected President of the Stawell Athletic Club in 1877. He served two further periods as President of the Club from 1879-1882 and then again from 1884-1888.Thomas Young Smith arrived in Stawell in the late 17th century with his parents. He\u00a0worked in town as a watchmaker and served the local community in a number of positions.In 1874 he was elected Life Governor of the Pleasant Creek Hospital and in 1875 was elected President of the Stawell Hospital and Benevolent Asylum (previously Pleasant Creek Hospital).<\/p>\n

In the same year he was also elected as a member of the Board of Advice for the State School No.502. Between the years 1875-1879 Thomas was a councillor in the Borough of Stawell and later from 1879-1880 served as Mayor.\u00a0 In 1893 Thomas was recognised as a Justice of the Peace.<\/p>\n

Thomas Young Smith was a keen sportsman and was instrumental in the establishment of the Stawell Athletic Club.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
