Dean has set a formidable record at Stawell, with six wins and two seconds to his credit.He won his first race in 1989 when he won the Grampians 3200 metres and followed up in 1991 with a win in the Australian Mile Championship.

However his greatest performances were in 2002 when he won the Herb Hedemann/3200 metres double, and 2004 when he again won the Hedemann as well as the 800 metres. He also ran second in the Hedemann in 2003.
